Deciding on a Career in STO

Description of Careers
In Star Trek Online there are three types of careers: Engineering, Tactical, and Science. It may be confusing for some people on which career to choose so here are a few helpful tips and ideas to lead you down the right path for you. Remember no career is better than the other so it doesn't matter what you choose.

• Engineering Officers : They provide support for the away team, while trying to slow the enemy's advance. They modify their weapons or create support units(such as turrets and drones) to help in the battlefield. In strategic terms they would be the defensive wall providing cover and support for the rest of the team.

• Science Officers : They weaken the enemy while also healing and strengthening the away team. They can do their fair share of damage but mainly focus on supporting the team to make sure they can focus on fighting.

• Tactical Officers : They are the heavy hitters. They deal the most damage to the enemy while trying to keep the enemy from targeting the away team. They make a great distraction and can take out enemies quickly.

Choosing a Career
The way I decided on my first career was to ask myself, what am I interested in when it comes to real life. I like technology and everything about it so the natural choice for me was to be an Engineer. Maybe you can decide the same way. Just ask yourself what you are more interested in and go with that. That doesn't help? Keep reading.

What would you prefer doing? If you just want to run into battle and kill everything in site then maybe you should be a Tactical Officer. If you would rather fight the enemy while also supporting your team then be a Engineering Officer. If you think you would do better healing your team and weakening the enemy then be a Science Officer.

If you still can't decide and you are playing with friends then see what they are picking. Base your decision on that. If you have 2 Tactical friends and 2 Science friends, then be an Engineer. If you have 1 Science friend and 1 Engineering friend then be a Tactical Officer. Try to find balance with your group of friends so when you play together your team will work well. It is always good to have at least one type of career in a team.

You can also decide if you have a certain Star Trek character that you are a fan of. Do you like Worf? Than be a Tactical Officer. Maybe you like Janeway, so be a Science Officer. La Forge is pretty cool so be an Engineering Officer.

When you get right down to it, the choice is yours, no one can tell you what career path to follow. None of the great Captains had someone decide for them, they just chose based on what they were mostly passionate about.
