SKILL PLANNER HELP

STO Academy Skill Planner
Current Version 4.7.0
Copyright © Attilio Vassallo 2010

Getting Started

The first thing you will want to do is choose your Faction, Career, and Rank. This will set up the planner with the appropriate abilities and skills. Using the filters will highlight all the skills that your build uses.

Next you might want to choose your ship which will bring up the bridge officer stations for it. You can click on each station and choose your bridge officers' abilities from a list. This will highlight the appropriate skills that affect those abilities.

You can also choose the space weapons that you are using as well as your personal abilities (which are automatically selected and highlighted) and your ground abilities.

If you want, you can use the "Remove skill point requirements" checkbox so that you do not have to meet the minimum requirements for each tier of skills.

Filters and Skill Highlighting

There are five filters in this planner to help you plan your skills easily. Here is a description of each one.

Space Energy Weapons - This filter allows you to choose the type of energy weapons that your ship is using. Choose if you are using Beam and/or Cannon/Turret weapons. Beam weapons are anything that shoot a long beam of energy. Cannon/Turret weapons shoot small bursts of energy. Next choose the damage type that your weapons are using (i.e. Phaser).

Space Projectile Weapons - This filter allows you to choose the type projectile weapons that your ship is using. Choose if you are using Torpedo and/or Mine weapons. Next choose the damage type that your weapons are using (i.e. Quantum).

Player Ability Filter - When you choose your rank, this will list all abilities that your character automatically gets as it levels up. They are automatically selected and the appropriate skills are highlight. You can de-select any of them if you don't use/need it.

Ground Ability Filter - This filter lists all of the possible ground abilities based on your career. You can select the ones you are using.

Ship / Bridge Officer Skill Filter - With this filter you can choose your ship and Bridge Officer skills. Choosing a ship will display the available Bridge Officer stations. Clicking each station will allow you to choose from a list of abilities.

SKILL PLANNING TIPS & SUGGESTIONS

Skill planning can seem very complicated since there is so much to consider. This skill planner aims to make it easier for people to plan out their skills by bringing all available information into one place. Even with this tool it can seem complex, so to compliment it here are a few tips and suggestions you can follow to get the most out of your skills. Keep in mind that you don't need to follow this to be successful. They are just a few guidelines to point you in the right direction.

  1. Rule of One - The most important thing to do is stick to one ship, energy weapon type, and projectile weapon type. Choosing only one ship type (crusier, science, or escort) and not switching between ships when you reach the level cap allows you to save skill points. If you were to fly two different ships, you would need to put skill points into both ships in order to get the best performance out of them. Those skill points could be better used someplace else.

The same thing goes for energy weapon and projectile weapon types. Each have 6 different types, pick one energy weapon and one projectile weapon and stick to it. This way you save some skill points and you know you're getting the most out of those weapons.

  2. Max Points - You'll notice that each tier of skills has a minimum number of points that need to be spent in order to move to the next tier. This is the suggested amount of points to spend in each tier.

    • Tier 1 (Lieutenant) - 6,800
    • Tier 2(Lt. Commander) - 18,800
    • Tier 3 (Commander) - 34,700
    • Tier 4 (Captain) - 52,700

  3. Core Skills - There are some skills that are good to put points into no matter what your build is because they give you some added bonuses to your ship. The three main ones are:

    • Starship Attack Vector
    • Starship Combat Maneuvers
    • Starship Battle Strategy

Aside from those, Starship Command is also good because it'll give any ship you use a boost to hull and shield strength, speed, and maneuverabilty. If you plan on using Engineering Team, Science Team, or Tactical Team then you'll want to put skill points into the appropriate Team Leader skills (i.e. the Engineering Team Leader skill boosts the Engineering Team ability).

It is also important to put points into the skill for the ship you are using. If you want to have faster hull repair rates then you should put points into the tier 5 skill, Starship Hull Repair.

Starship Energy Weapon Training and Starship Projectile Weapons Training are both very good. Every ship should use energy and projectile weapons so giving them a little extra boost with these skills is a good idea.
