Scratch the Paint

You become immune to one Warp Core Breach, as long as this is active. Being hit by a Warp Core Breach removes the effect, but it automatically refreshes after some time has passed.
Impulse Drafting I
Space Skill
Adds a Defense Bonus to each stack of Danger Zone, increasing your Defense for each Foe within 2.0km (and Friend, if "Wing Man" is active).

Bob and Weave
Space Skill
When an enemy misses you in combat you take the opportunity to hit them back, right where it hurts. Critical Severity is increased for each stack of "Bob and Weave" (up to 10 max). A successful Critical Hit removes all built up stacks of this buff.
Lone Wolf I
Space Skill
Any players on your team that are within 10km will automatically Placate foes near them when you activate this, making you the only valid target in range for a short time. You will gain increased Defense and automatic Shield Redistribution for the duration of this ability.

The Placate effect is fragile to their own damage. If they continue dealing damage, it will wear off quickly.

Flying at high speed into the shields of an enemy will drain their shield capacity and reduce their shield's resilience to incoming damage. The magnitude of both effects will scale with the speed at which you scrape against them. You may scrape against enemies once per second, but any enemy recently scraped will be immune to further scraping for 10 seconds.

SKILL PLANNING TIPS & SUGGESTIONS

Skill planning can seem very complicated since there is so much to consider. This skill planner aims to make it easier for people to plan out their skills by bringing a lot of information into one place. Even with this tool it can seem complex, so to compliment it here are a few tips and suggestions you can follow to get the most out of your skills. Keep in mind that you don't need to follow this to be successful. They are just a few guidelines to point you in the right direction.

  1. Improve Weaknesses - It is best to choose one type of ship (cruiser, escort, or science) and stick to it. They each have their strengths and weaknesses which you should learn about as you use that ship type. For example, cruisers have slower turn rates and escorts have weaker shields. As you play with a ship type you'll learn about it and then can put points into skills that will improve that weakness. So if your ship moves too slow, you'll put points into skills that boost engine power and turn rate. You need to find what you don't like about the ship and compensate for it.

  2. Become Stronger - On that same note, ships also have strengths. For example, escorts can deal a ton of damage. Knowing your ship's strengths is helpful so that you can put points into skills that will make you even stronger in those areas. If your ship can take a lot of damage, put points into skills that boost shield and hull so that it can take even more damage.

  3. Spending Skill Points - It is a good idea to put a maximum of 6 points into the various skills that you need. The last 3 points give a very small bonus which you can do without. This allows you to spend more points in more places. If there are skills where you feel you absolutely need all 9 points, feel free to do that.

  4. Maximum Skill Points - You'll notice that each rank has a maximum number of skill points and both ground and space have a maximum number of points you can put into each. I can't tell you how many points to spend in both space and ground beause that is a matter of preference, however I do suggest that for each rank you have:

    • Lieutenant - 33,000 skill points
    • Lt. Commander - 93,000 skill points
    • Commander - 173,000 skill points
    • Captain - 263,000 skill points
    • Admiral - 366,000 skill points

    This will give you the right amount of balance in each and also make sure you have enough points to fill up the higher rank skills.

SKILL PLANNER HELP

The Toolbar
In the toolbar you can set your Faction, Career, and Rank. There is also an option for a Description which allows you to explain what your build is about. This is primarily used in the Build Sharing page. Also, you can write Build Notes which can be used for a reminder, to explain certain things, or anything else.

The Save and Load buttons allow you to save or load your builds from the site or a file. Keep in mind that to easily load your build from the site, you must be logged in. There is also a Print Skill Tree option which wil let you print out only the skill tree.

The General Suggestions button gives tips and suggetions on how to create your build.


Ship Tab
The ship tab gives you a list of all ships that are avilable for your faction. You can choose any of those ships for your build and then setup the various options that appear.

Bridge Officer Slots
On the left side, under the ship's image, is a list of all bridge officer slots for the ship you chose. Clicking on any of the ability slots will open up a window where you can choose a bridge officer ability for that slot. Make sure you choose the Save Bridge Officer button to save it. If a bridge officer slot is Universal, you'll need to choose the career and than choose the abilities.

Equipment Slots
In the middle you'll see a list of equipment slots for your ship. Clicking on any of the slots will allow you to choose from a list of options in order to setup that item. Some items provide abilities which will be displayed in the Abilites from Items and Sets box on the right. More information below.

Abilities
On the right side are two boxes. At the top is the Unlocked Player Ship Abilities box. This is a list of all ship abilities that you unlock as you increase in level. You can check all of them or just the ones you used most often. Checking an ability will show recommendations for it in the Skill Tree tab if it is affected by a Skill. Underneath that is the Abilities from Items and Sets box. This will hold a list of all possible abilities that you can get from the various items you have chosen in your build.


Character Tab

The character tab allows you to setup your equipment, away tema, and abilities based on your career and your away team officers' careers.

Equipment Slots
On the left you'll see a list of equipment slots for your character. Clicking on any of the slots will allow you to choose from a list of options in order to setup that item. Some items provide abilities which will be displayed in the Abilities from Items and Sets box on the right. More information below.

Away Team
In the middle you can set up all four of your away team officers. Choose the career of your officer and then click on any of the four ability slots to choose that officer's ground abilities. Make sure you choose the Save Bridge Officer button to save it.

Abilities

Skill Tree
The skill tree tab is a replica of the skill tree in Star Trek Online. It show how many skill points you have used and have remaining. You have the option to disable requirements which means you can put points anywhere you want. The Reset Skill Points button will reset the entire skill tree.

Clicking on any skill will display the description for it. There is a feature that allows you to read a simpler description of the skill for people who may not understand what the game's description says. If this skill affects any abilities, they will be listed at the bottom of the description.

The upper left corner of the skill boxes shows a number. This number is how many abilities that the skill affects. If there is a star in the upper right corner, that means this skill is suggested for your setup. Finally, there are two arrow buttons. The blue ones increase and decrease the points one at a time. The red ones completely fill or empty the points. You can also double click on a skill and enter the number of points you want to add.


Mobile Devices
While using the skill tree, tap on a skill to add skill points to it. Tap and hold to view the description of that skill.

Woohoo! It's finally here! Go ahead, I dare you to log onto the STO Academy site from your phone or tablet and check out the skill planner! I just want to let you know that the new reputation system as well as the new ships will be added this week if not today.

The site and skill planner are being updated! You'll now be able to easily use the skill planner on your mobile devices. As for updates to the planner, you'll be able to choose up to 5 kit abilities instead of choosing just an actual kit. Unfortunately your current kit information will be lost, but displaying your abilities like this is better than showing which kit you own. If I can't get the new reputation system into the update on the April 22nd then I'll definitely get it into the planner sometime this week.

Okay it's been almost a month since my last post... whoops. I've actually been busy with real life stuff and getting the new STO Academy site ready for Season 9. It's looking really awesome! The entire site (including the skill planner) will be useable across all your devices. It's a huge step forward which I'm excited to release. At the time of writing this I'm still in the middle of getting the skill planner ready for this and for Season 9.

In case you didn't hear, I won't be releasing any updates to the skill planner until the new site is released. It's just too much work and I'd rather focus on one major update across the entire site instead of tiny updates here and there. If you haven't done so already, check me out on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ because I'll be releasing some screenshots of the new site here occasionally.

New updates today! As some of you may have heard, kits are being revamped in the game for Season 9. The skill planner will be updated to match this. My plan is to remove all current kit information, then allow you to choose up to 5 abilities for your kit. This is only my plan for now. As I play around and look at how the new kits work on Tribble my plan may change. You may also have noticed I removed the "upcoming updates" bar to the right. I did that because I really haven't been keeping it up to date and felt it wasn't fair to keep inaccurate information here.

I know updates have been coming along slowly for the planner but hopefully I made up for it this weekend. Yesterday and today I released a bunch of updates which mostly added missing equipment and icons. Eventually I'll be going over the ships and adding in missing ship images (I know there are a bunch).

The skill planner is far from perfect but it's great thanks to your help! I've been thinking over an idea for the coming months. I'd like to build an entire community based around the skill planner. I haven't worked out the details yet but essentially it'll be place where everyone can discuss builds, ask/answer questions, have their builds reviewed and improved, and things like that. I'll definitely provide more information as I come up with it.

The skill planner search page now displays a percentage of how much of the build is complete. This should give a better idea of which builds contain more information than others and therefore make it easier to find the build you're looking for.

I know a lot of people have come to me about finding empty builds. Most of the builds are probably pre-version 5 which didn't have that information. I've been thinking of a way to filter them out of the search but haven't had a chance to do anything yet. As for builds that you find throughout the internet, if they are empty then ask whoever posted it to update the build/link.

Unfortunately I haven't had time to do anything with the skill planner yet. I know there are some updates that need to be added but my free time has been limited *sad face*. I'll do my best to get some updates out by Tuesday the 18th. Pray that I get some free time haha! By the way, I'd just like to thank everyone who supports the planner with bug reports and encouragement, I really appreciate it.

Hey everyone! I've started working on adding secondary deflectors to the skill planner, however I don't think I'll have it ready for release until I've unlocked at least one of the Dyson ships in game. This also means that the Dyson ships won't be added until I'm satisfied with how the secondary deflector is setup in the skill planner. Sorry for the delay. I'll work as quickly as possible!
