F2P First Impressions
Captain's Blog Stardate 89358.75
On Thursday Cryptic released a huge updated on the Tribble server which will come to Holodeck along with F2P. A lot of people have been asking about content and complaining that Cryptic hasn't released anything, but from my person point of view this was worth the wait. Lets start from the beginning shall we? The very first update we get to see is in the tutorial. Sadly it is the same tutorial that we have had all along aside from some changes in the beginning. Instead of starting in the mess hall you start in a section based on your career. Engineers start in engineering. Science officers start in sick bay. Tactical officers start in the weapons rooms. The bridge of this ship looks amazing by the way. Another amazing update is to the mission list. I really don't know how to describe it besides amazing. The main screen has one section which shows the next mission in the story arc. It also has quick links to PvE and PvP queus. It'll tell you if there is a mission you need to turn in as well as any events that are going on in the game. You can also go to the episodes tab to see the list of episodes and for easy replay access. As for the first 10 levels of the game, they go by a lot quicker than they used to. I think the beginning of the game has been improved enough to hook newcomers. Now what you all have been waiting for, DUTY OFFICERS!! Let me start by saying I like it! It can be a little confusing at first because there are so many options and you have a whole bunch of duty officers, but its a great system. The basics behind this are to give you additional rewards and boosts. I'll give you a brief idea now, but expect a video to be posted on my YouTube channel this week. First of all you are able to post officers on different duties (either ground or space). Each officer gives some sort of boost (for example, draining enemy shields when using tractor beam). You can also send officers on assignments which give you rewards. Combining different officers gives you different probabilities of success. If they succeed then you get the reward. As I said I will be posting up a video during the week to explain this in greater detail. Overall it seems amazing! On that note, I will be playing to level cap on Tribble so expect weekly updates from me at the end of each blog letting you know about any new features I come across and how this new system affects the game. In the meantime, if you've tried out STO on Tribble feel free to leave your feedback in the comments below.Written by Attilio on October 02, 2011 at 10:41 pm

I intended to spend a lot of time this week end on Tribble trying out the new FTP features. Unfortrunately, technical issues with the regular game put me a couple of days behind in getting started. As a result, I have only been able advance my Tribble character to LT10. Even so, I think the new system is going to be very good. I really like the new mission list and having a single replacement for all the various badges and emblems will simplify things immensely. That said, I was a little concerned about the prices for items that you buy with Dilithium. Personal weapons, for instance, have a flat price for all levels, so a MK II phaser now has a four figure price, whereas in the old economy you could buy a Tier Five starship for a mere 500 emblems. I hope they either provide some ways to earn large amounts of Dilithium in a reasonable amount of time or adjust the prices of the items you buy with it to a more reasonable level.

The problem is that we still don't know what the conversion will be for all those old currencies into the new one. I'm sure it'll end up being fair for all of us anyway.
