Lifers and Vets
Captain's Blog Stardate 90392.87
This week Cryptic announced the 1000 day Veteran Rewards which were two new ships (one for each faction). I found these ships to be amazing. I've tested out the Chimera Destroyer (Starfleet's ship) and really love it. To me it looks like a cruiser, has the shield and hull strength of a science vessel, and maneuvers like an escort. Now I can't sit here and say that it has the best of all 3 types of ships because that would mean it is the ultimate ship in game and there is no such thing, but it is was very well thought out.
The Klingon version of this ship is pretty much exactly the same, with some minor differences. It also comes equipped with a battle cloak which is only given to Bird-of-Prey ships, so this is the first Raptor to ever have it. What I don't like about this ship is the tactical mode. Personally, I think the two beam arrays that come out from the top and bottom look really strange. Speaking of things I don't like, the deflector on the Chimera seems a little too big. Overall the ship is nice (even in Tactical mode) but I just can't get over how big that deflector is.
Aside from these ships, Cryptic made one other announcement which has been a bit controversial. From now on, anyone who has or buys a lifetime subscription will immediately get all the veteran rewards. I have seen a lot of people complaining about this. They feel that this cheapens the lifetime subscription, that it isn't fair to people who have been paying to play this game for 1000 days, and things along those lines. I'd like to give my perspective as someone who has been a lifetime member since the game was first released.
When I purchased my lifetime subscription way back in the beginning of 2010 I was excited. I knew that as a lifetime member I would have access to everything until the game shuts down. Eventually Cryptic announced the veteran rewards and I was once again excited. I knew for a fact that even if I didn't play the game for 5 years, I would still be given these rewards. This got me thinking (and I remember other people having the same thought), why doesn't Cryptic just unlock these rewards for all lifetime members? We'll eventually get it anyway, might as well give it to us now.
I still feel that way. Even though I have been with this game for 1000 days and had to wait for each veteran reward, I think this was a great move by Cryptic that they should have done a long time ago. It doesn't hurt anyone, especially those of us who have had lifetime subscriptions for a long time. As a matter of fact it benefits us. This new perk might be an incentive for more people to buy lifetime subscriptions, which means more money for Cryptic, which means the game will last longer. Isn't that why we invested in a lifetime subscription in the first place? To play the game as long as possible without having to pay a monthly subscription?
So this week I'd like to hear your opinions about these two new ships, as well as your thoughts about this new lifetime perk.

Your thoughts on the LTS are identical to my own, or since you have played longer my are the same as yours.
Good post!!!
It is a really good time for people to upgrade to LTS if they have not done so...

I fully agree as well, I bought my LTS during the last offer and it is gratifying to get the extra Veteran benefits immediately. My one concern is have they done this because an end date has been set?

The new ships are great, I have finalized the spec for the Crimea which is definitely better than the Armitage in my view and on a par with the D'Kora. I still have to work up the KDF version so cannot comment yet.

I find it ironic that people are protesting this move.
If anything it increases the value of their LTS, because it helps the game to have resources to actually do things, including both expand and survive.
The simple fact of the matter is that the promise of a ship 1000 days away is not going to be a very big selling point, nor are any of the other goodies more than maybe 6-12 months away. It's so small it can hardly be considered a selling point for an LTS, especially when there's always the possibility that for whatever reason they won't end up seeing that reward.
In other words Cryptic giving an incentive to sell what many regard as an expensive, useless thing now (LTS), which turns profit, which makes it more likely that STO will be around in the future. It's unfortunate that so few people see this.

I did just buy the LTS, so maybe I'm a little bit biassed.....but I also think it's a good thing. A LTSer is a LTSer. I could understand people's reactions if the same was for the monthly subscribers.
