Mining for DOffs
Captain's Blog Stardate 89837.51
This week we saw two important updates to the game. First is the new duty officer NPCs. They are scattered throughout the homeworlds, academies, and DS9 as well as your ship interior. They are just a way for you to get some additional duty officer assignments. What is nice is that you can now trade 5 duty officers of one rarity for another one of a higher rarity. For example you can trade 5 common (white) for 1 uncommon (green) duty officer. The shipboard NPCs can create special items for you such as Hypos.
These new NPCs on your ship are great because they add some much needed functionality. Of course this once again brought up the "travel through sector space from our bridge" argument. I have to agree that Cryptic should implement this. It only neesd to be a simple timer which counts down the time until you reach your destination. There is no need to have your ship represented in sector space for this. I truely hope Cryptic takes this idea and uses it.
The other update this week is the new mining mission near DS9 and Bajor. You can put on your EV suit and go mining for Dilithium on an asteroid. Its pretty cool that you can do this now and its a great way to promote use of the EV suits. I can't wait to see additional EV suit missions in the future (hopefully one on the hull of a ship).

I returned to town and was able to run the mining mission (and get the free Orange suit. : )
Seems interesting, I was able to get a 400 score, but another guy who had been doing it for two days was sometimes able to get 725!
[The key seems to be using the keyboard instead of the mouse!]

Thanks for the hint ChrisHerr. I'll try the keyboard next time. I want some better rewards from that mission.

I haven't had a lot of luck with the mining missions due to my sloow reaction time on the keyboard. I ahd the same problem, only worse, when we were supposed to chase miniature Q's around Starfleet Academy. Oh, well, that's the way it goes sometimes.
I did notice that there appears to be no limit to the number of EVA suits you could buy for free. I don't know if Cryptic is planning for full EV suit away team missions or not, but I acquired five suits for each of my characters just in case. I also discovered that my Klingon chracters are still able to do the Dominion missions even though those have expired for the Federation characters. I'm not sure why there's a difference. I guess the Warden at Facility 4028 likes Klingons better than Feds.

The Dominion missions haven't expired for the Feds, they have been integrated into the Cardassian story line. They are all the way at the end.
