News on Ships
Captain's Blog Stardate 91331.34
Cryptic is doing a new blog called "Interview a Dev" where players can submit questions to a specific dev. It's similar to Ask Cryptic except it can be any dev, not just Dan Stahl. The first dev to be interview is CaptainGeko who got asked a lot of questions about ships.
Apparently they are looking into releasing more set bonuses for ships which I think is a great idea. If I recall correctly, the Odyssey and Bortasqu' were the first ships to have a bonus set which. As more ships were released they began to have their own set bonuses. I think it's a great idea to go back, look at older ships, update them, and add some new sets.
A new Klingon tier 5 ship is being created along with a number of Voth ships. I think it's safe to assume that the next lock box will be a Voth lock box. I wonder if Cryptic is going to continue adding new enemies to game and giving us lock boxes for those ships. It does seem like the pattern they are following.
I still want a Vulcan escort to be made...
Something interesting to note, although details weren't released, is that Crusiers, Battlecruisers, Flight Deck Cruisers, and Science Vessels are getting a new mechanic. I assume it's something to make them more unique. Right now I personally feel that Carriers are the most unique ship, followed by Science Vessels that have the inate ability to attack subsystems. Other than that, all ships are mostly the same (not consider turnrates, hull, etc.) So it'll be interesting to see what unique feature these ships will get.
A question was brought up about science abilities and tanking roles being useless. CaptainGeko's answer is the longest he gave in this interview and I understand why. It's an interesting topic so I'll save this for next week as I feel it deserves an entire blog. For now, in the comments below let me know what you think about some of this ship news. What do you think this new mechanic will be? Are you looking forward to some Voth ships? Am I the only one who wants a Vulcan escort?! Let me know in the comments below!

While I appreciated, that Cryptic is continously working on new content, I want some specific Ships.
A Vulcan Escort would be nice, but personally I want an unique Two-Hangar-Bay Romulan Carrier. :D

A Vulcan Escort would be great! As would more Andorian ships (Cruiser/Sci Ship)? I mean all these alien ships are well and fine, and I do like Crpyitc for "expanding" the universe, but how about more Trek in my Stars? There's plenty of opportunity to create new/unique ships that at least play lip service to canon. I'd expect more Starfleet officers be flying Tellarite ships over Voth or Elachi, you know? Consider the existing Canon UFP races and mine those before using enemy ships (I'm dreading the day our Starfleet/KDF captains get Borg Cubes, for instance). KDF have an edge over Feds in this regard, more of their core races are represented ship-wise.
Going back and "retrofitting" existing ships with touch-up or new set bonuses would certainly be welcome. Unfortunately, it's not as profitable as cooking up something entirely new. So while we probably will get *some* old-ship-updates *eventually* (like the recent updates to the D'Kyr), it will come over time and in-between other money-making/game-supporting activities. (This isn't a slight, I *get* why, just practical observation.)
As for new Sci/Cruiser mechanics, other interviews have had Devs talking about a secondary Deflector dish for Sci ships and extra armor for Cruisers. I'd expect that to still be the way they're planning to go. I can see where the former could give Sci powers a needed boost, but my thought is that the last thing Cruisers need is more protection. Though, I suppose if that frees up Eng console slots they might be able to fill them with other (offensive) universal and/or turn rate consoles to improve performance.

I find the idea of a vulcan escort fantastic, but it have to be a 24/25 century vulcan, not some 22/23 century old ship design.
