Playable Enemy Ships
Captain's Blog Stardate 91235.59
Hello STOers! Let me just apologize for not having a blog and newsletter last week. I returned home from Las Vegas early Monday morning and was so tired that I forgot. Not to mention that I had to do a movie review for my YouTube show, CoreScoop. It was a crazy day.
Now I'm back and ready to blog! Today I need to talk about getting enemy ships through lock boxes. The newest lock box gives us Elachi ships and to be honest when I first saw the Elachi I loved that they were a mysterious powerful race. Now that we have access to their ships, I don't see them the same way.
I'm just going to quickly run through some of the ships we have access to that don't belong to any of our playable factions and what I think about them.
Jem'Hadar Attack Ship - It wasn't from a lock box, but it was the first enemy ship we ever got. The reason this worked is because it had a good story behind it.
Cardassian & Ferengi Ships - I put these together because in the STO story both of these races are allied with the Federation so it's easy to see why we would have access to their ships.
Tholian Ships - When they were first released I thought "this makes no sense, we shouldn't be able to use them". The Tholians are supposed to be a powerful mysterious enemy and now we get to use their technology and ships. I wasn't too thrilled with it, but I let it go.
Dominion - The fact that we already had access to the Jem'Hadar Attack Ship made this easier to swallow so I just brushed it off.
Tal Shiar - This worked because the Romulan Republic became friends with the Federation and Klingon Emprie. It's possible that some of the Romulans from the Republic had or got a hold of these ships and either used them or "gave" them to their new friends. It's also possible that the Romulans who had these ships sold them.
Elachi - This is another "this makes no sense" moment for me. Why are we getting access to Elachi ships? It's pretty much the same thought as the Tholian Ships.
Now I understand the purpose behind all these ships is for Cryptic to make money. Frankly it's probably easier than trying to think of new ships for each faction all the time. All that have to do is repurpose a ship skin which is already in the game and give it to everyone.
Still, it bothers me that we're getting access to so many enemy ships. It just makes me look at them differently. I know some people are going to bite my head for this, but I really hope we never get playable Borg or Undine ships unless we get to play as those factions first.
Am I the only one who thinks all this is just weird? Let me know in the comments!

Nope. You are not alone with this. I share the feeling and totally agree on all of them and to be honest, I only have the Jem'Hadar Dreadnought Carrier on my main Toon, because at that time neither a 2 Bay Romulan Carier existed (still doesn't) nor were the Scimitars revealed.
I understand, that Cryptic need to look for other moneymaking methods since the game went F2P, but giving us the opportunity to play every enemy Ship is getting ridiculous. Arguments like "Hey, that Ship is not supposed to support mammal life" seem not to carry. Therefore, I share your hope regarding Borg and Undine Ships. Because "Hey, that Ship needs a Hive mind to control it" or "That Ship needs a pilot with Undine DNA" wouldn't count either, I'm afraid.

I do not wish to disagree with the points of view above, as they are valid reasons! But, think of the reason, why we get the ships.
After every battle, their are winners and losers, the losers retreat and the winners continue to defeat what is left of the enemy. Someone will come and clear the battlefield, possibly the Ferengie get their first & repair or remove ships/consoles and Business is Business!
Just a thought, as the Ferengie are masters in stealing and replicating for profit.
Just think of "Cryptic" being a Branch of the "Ferengie Allience"?
But their again, I do not want to see the game get out of context, some ships/species should be left alone.

Just imagine 20 cubes in sector space stuck in one place trying to get somewhere (similar to Dreadnought Warbirds now).
As I recall, Odyssey was fan made ship in some contest, and bunch of ship concepts I saw are amazing, so there is no excuse for doing such thing all the time.
Agreed on Card/Ferengi ships, and even Jem'Hadar (it was used in DS9 series), but all others...

I'm rather "Meh" about this batch. Mirror ships make some sense since they keep invading like mad. Elachi ships have only been directly encountered by the Romulans at this point in the story line. So to make them an across the board prize is a tad odd.
Of course we could find out that some so and so like Franklin Drake has been out poking his overly long nose into places it shouldn't be and that's where the ships are coming from. One never knows which way things will go after all. Just look at the Klingon history line since TOS.

Its been a while since I posted here! :)
I look at the enemy ships from a different aspect, that of one of my characters whom I intend on blogging on soon. Part of her backstory is that she is in charge of exotic technology research on captured ships.
For a while I had a Tholian Recluse languishing in her roster so I decided to work her through the Nukara reps and "restore" the Recluse to operational state, "factory specs" as it were. Which led me onto the idea of her being in charge of an "exotic tech" division....so now she has a collection of exotica!

I personally don't use them, wouldn't buy them, but I like the option of having them in the game. A lot of people roleplay and being able to have the option of roleplaying the enemy is enjoyable to some people, so they'll need the option of getting the "bad guy's" ships.

I agree with getting tired of seeing every alien ship. That is one of the reasons my JHEC ends up in dry dock so often. Although I did spec it out with phasers and fed equipment, so I can claim it as repurposed Dominion salvage

The larger Elachi ship is basically just a souped up Fed. Dreadnought Cruiser. I'd rather just play that. The Crescent Cannon is basically similar to the spinal laser on the Dread as well. I agree with Andrew that they are quite fun to RP with. I pretend to disable the ships and 'board' them (get invited onto the bridge) where I rescue the beautiful Orion in distress and... oh. back on topic: Having the Tholian ships is like having the Temporal ships; odd, but fun to mess around with. Most of the 'alien' ships are basically the same, ability-wise as the regular Fed. KDF, and Rommie ships, IMO.... so wonderful skins for my ships, but not much difference from regular C-ships, etc. Except for the Rom. Dreadnought and Tal Shiar ships, those are bloody awesome.
