Romulan Fleet Info and More

Captain's Blog Stardate 90852.71

We definitely have a lot to talk about this week! Cryptic released the latest Ask Cryptic and it's all about the Legacy of Romulus expansion. The first thing I want to touch on is fleets which was a total shock to me but I understand. The Romulan faction won't be able to have their own fleets in a sense. As Daniel Stahl explained it, at some point in the story players will need to choose an alliance with either the Federation or KDF. After that, they can join any fleet from that faction.

So you create your Romulan character and reach the point where you choose an alliance. You decide to choose KDF. You can now join any KDF fleet or create your own fleet. If you create a fleet, it will be considered a KDF fleet so that means any other KDF player can join it. Of course, as the leader you could limit it to just Romulan faction characters, but that's your choice. Keep in mind that in this example, only Romulan characters that are aligned with the KDF can join it.

The reason Cryptic is doing it like this is because they feel that fleets have put a lot of time and effort into their current holdings and want them to continue growing. It also fits well with the story line in game. New Romulus is still growing and seeking assistance from the outside, therefore they wouldn't have much of their own.

The characters available are Romulan, Reman, and Alien-Gen hybrid. Remans will be unlockable and the Alien-Gen are essentially a hybrid of aliens and Romulans. It won't be a complete alien race as we have in the Federation and KDF factions. The justification for this is that the Romulans are very xenophobic and therefore wouldn't allow many outsiders to join them.

I also want to briefly talk about the new UI for the game. I logged onto the Tribble test server and checked it out. I'm truly impressed by it and hopefully everyone else will enjoy it as well. It gives the game a more Trek feel and the different themes you can choose from look really nice. You'll also be able to resize the minimap and (this is my favorite part) have multiple chat windows open. Instead of just the one window in the corner, you can setup multiple chat windows for different purposes. Yay!

I suggest everyone takes a look at the latest Ask Cryptic and log onto to Tribble to test out some of the new features. I promise you won't be disappointed. If you have any thoughts on all this let me know in the comments below. I'd really like to hear what you think about Cryptic's approach to fleets and the new UI.

Update! Cryptic has just released a blog with information about possible future factions. I'm so excited! http://sto.perfectworld.com/news/?p=841013

Well, I have to say that is probably the most informative, and enlightening, Dev Blog that I have seen in some time. I'm glad they have been able to enlist a higher grade of Developer to get these other factions out. ; )

Also, I too was surprised that there won't be a Romulan Starbase, but can see how they are thinking.

I am surprised they haven't listed a Liberated Borg Romulan, or a joined Trill Romulan. As I assumed they would keep those in all 'races'

I'm also very curious about their comments that they can't talk about your characters joining the Tal'Shiar in the future as it would lead to spoilers. ; )

So, decision I need to think about is if my new Romulan Engineer will be Fed affiliated, or KDF affiliated.....

Hmmmm, might come down to the outfit choices, as we have good fleets for both!

I am looking forward to the changes coming in May. I agree with Cryptic's decision not to create another set of Fleets?Starbases for us to dump resources into. I'm having trouble enough keeping resources to the three Starbases our fleets already have. The one thing I'm a little worried about, and I hipe I'm wrong, but one of DStall's responses mentioned Romulan characters being able to "buy" new starships as they move up in rank. Does that men that there will not be any free ships after tier one? Another point I am wondering about is whether we can revise any of our existing characters to make them Romulan. I have an alien toon (Selana) who I specifically designed as a Romulan using a combination STOA's and another website's formulas for creating Romulan characters. It would be nice if I could actually make her one.

I'll have to check out the new stuff on Tribble. It sounds interesxting. I didn't see any of it when I checked out Tribble a week or so ago.

From what I understand, we'll get a free ship at each tier like we do now, but there will be c-store ships too. It's no different than the current factions.

It appears that this is going to be a very interesting update. Since I reached the point where I've wiped out all the episode missions, new content will be highly welcome. Like Warburton, I am much in agreement on the fleet plan.

I've also discovered that I'm using this website a great deal. Time to contribute a bit in game. Time to join the Academy Militia I think.

I went on Tribble to check out the new UI. It is awesome. The graphics are great and it is easy to use. I didn't notice any serious bugs in the new content.

I'm glad to hear that they're apparently not changing the ship distribution system.
