Romulus Release Woes
Captain's Blog Stardate 90967.55
Well it's finally here, Open Beta! If you're interested in checking out the Legacy of Romulus expansino, head on over to the Tribble test server. Create a Romualn or Klingon and check out all the new content.
I finally took the time to create a Klingon and see the tutorial for it. I honestly don't feel that it is the same quality as the Romulan tutorial but it is still good. Cryptic tried to give your first bridge officers a personality and reason for joining you. I feel that it worked better for the Romulan faction than it does for the Klingons. I can't complain too much though, at least the Klingons have gotten some love.
It's been 3 long years but we can finally say we have a complete Klingon faction. New players can finally start in any faction they want and actually have something to do. It's a great time to play STO for both new and old players.
We're getting ever so close to the release of LoR. I don't know about you, but I'm a little worried. Those of you who have tried to play on Tribble this past weekend know how long it took to log into the game. It was tribble test weekend so I'm sure an extra amount of players were logging on, but still... I can just imagine how many people will be logging on when LoR is released.
Let's hope the servers don't crash as they've done in the past. I believe it was when the second featured series was released, so many people logged on to the game on release day just to play that 1 episode. The servers were overloaded and crashed. I'm really hoping we don't see a repeat of that and I hope it doesn't take an hour just to log into the game.
I guess only time will tell. Now that open beta is here and more of you have the chance to test it out, I'd like to hear your first impressions. You've read about mine long enough, now it's your turn!

I was either one of the lucky few or it was that I was on Tribble in the early CEST hours. I encounter that queue only once.
I share your hopes for stable servers when LoR is released, but remember the release of Season 7? Personally, I expect a worst case scenario and let myself be pleasantly surprised, should everything go smoothly.

Well I played until level 30(Commander) on my romulan KDF, But i got stuck at sometime where the mission wouldn't go further.
The cinematics are neat, and the ships too ! I love the story arc.
Regarding the queues, I went gold friday night, and since then no probs.

I hit a queue of 607 on Tribble Saturday and decided to go play on Holodeck. Mon't was on a bit after that and said he'd seen a queue or 27,000+!!. Yet last night around 8pm I got into Tribble with no trouble at all.

I played on Tribble quite a bit from Friday until today and the glut of players was only a problem on Saturday and Sunday. The queues were long, but never longer than 1200 people, which would be about a forty minutes wait. For some reason, Cryptic kept switching the message from "You are number 143 out of 654" to "You are number 27,485 out of 27,485," or whatever number they felt like listing. At one point it was toggling a message that I was number 68,000+ with a message about my actual place in the queue. Given all the hype,I was not surprised at the number of people trying to log on. As far as I know, they only had one actual crash, which is pretty good all things considered.
The Romulan missions were very well done. My only problem was that I got stuck during the "Neutral No More" mission and it took me the better part of the day (and a visit to the STO forums) to fix the problem. I was also a bit disappointed that I couldn't activate any of my old toons or the fleet, but I can see where allowing that would have massively increased the load on the system reluctantly agree with Cryptic's decision to have everyone start from scratch.
As a result of my time consuming mistake in "Neutral No More" and my desire to activate toons on both my Gold and Silver accounts, I have only been able to advance to Level 18 with my main Tribble toon. The missions are so much fun to play that I plan to finish the story thread before I go back to Holodeck for any substantial amount of time.
p. s. I loved the Romulan Command Center. It's not huge, but it's a nice design and seems to have everything a good Romulan might need.

Please insert "and I" between "the system" and "reluctantly" in the above message. It's a good thing I'm a starship captain and an admiral. I'd never be able to support myself as a secretary. :)
