Sci-Fi and STO Rules
Captain's Blog Stardate 91044.06
Hey STO Academy readers! Before I get into this week's topic, I just want to make a quick announcement. I recently started a brand new YouTube show called Core Scoop. It's a weekly show in which I talk about various sci-fi news as well as different technologies and projects that are turning science fiction into reality. I'd like to ask all of you to take a look and show your support. When you have a chance go to youtube.com/CoreScoop and take a look.
I have ideas to continually improve the show, but I'm always willing to hear your thoughts as well. So please leave your comments below the video, subscribe to the channel, tell your friends, family, and even enemies. I'll really appreciate any sort of support you can show. Together we can start to grow the Coreverse!
Now on to some good old fashioned Star Trek Online news... well there isn't much to talk about because this past week has been boring. At least Cryptic finally fixed that bug which prevented us from deleting messages. I've finally cleaned out my inbox! Yes that's how boring STO has been this week, you get to hear about my inbox.
Actually I do have a question. Very recently Cryptic sold the Romulan Starter and Legacy Packs for a low price as well as put the lifetime subscription on sale. I'm curious how many of you bought any of that stuff and why (or why not). Leave your answers below.
I bought the Legacy Pack because it seemed like a great deal. A ton of ships, master keys, etc. for a low price. Now I have access to all those consoles which I've found useful so far. It's also been fun for me to use the C-Store ships as I leveled up instead of the regular free ships. Although to be honest, I didn't feel like they gave me any sort of advantage aside from the console abilities.
Since there isn't much else going on, I'll end the blog here. I feel like I'm cheating all of you out of a blog this week, but hopefully my announcement of the Core Scoop will make up for it. I hope STO is more interesting this week!

I'll start with the LTS. I have bought it in November, when it was on sale. Actually a series of events led to me buying the LTS.
1. My local P&W department gave me a refund worth 300 EUR.
2. LTS went on sale for 199 USD.
3. LTS was upgraded to instantly include ALL Veteran Rewards
So I decided, it is worth it. After all it pays off after little over a year AND I get cool stuff (e.g. Android BOFF, free VA Ship Token, 1000 Day Veteran Ship, etc.). Btw, the Bonuses on XP allowed me to get my Romulan pretty fast to Level 50. ;)
Now for the Legacy / Starter Pack. Honestly, the Legacy Pack was a bit unbalanced in my opinion. It contained way too much Ships, that one would only use for level 10 levels. The 30 Lock Box Keys did little to balanced that out. Later on we learned about the Consoles and their Set Bonuses, but still I thought it was overpriced. Then there is the Starter Pack. I bought that one, because it was more attractive to me. It is decently priced, contained two Ships (T'Varo / T'Varo Retrofit)and a nice Liberated Reman Borg BOFF.
Buying this Starter Pack was a sweet deal to me. I was thinking about getting the T'Varo Retrofit anyway and now I have the full Set Bonus on it. In addition, I could save my VA Ship Token for another Romulan T5 Ship.

I bought the Legacy Pack and, so far, I am enjoying it very much. Normally, I resist buying C-Store ships, but I knew that sooner or later I'd buy one or two of the tier five ships, so I figured I might as well buy them before the price went up. I also liked the 30 Master Keys, which I promptly sold for a ton of EC. I like the consoles that come with the Legacy Pack better than the ones that came with the Odyssey Pack ships. I thought the prices were a little steep, but I had some spare money in the bank and I doubt if the Legacy Pack will go on sale any time soon, if ever, now that the introductory sale is over.

I checked out CoreScoop this morning and I liked it very much. The "Iron Sky" movie review brought back memories of reading Heinlein's "Rocket Ship Galileo" when I was a kid. Same basic plot device, just set several decades earlier. The segments on private space missions to the Moon and Mars also brought back memories of Fifties science stories where the characters sit around talking about how space travel is "too big" for governments to be able to finance and that only "Private Enterprise" can raise the kind of capital needed to go into space. At the time I thought it was pretty it now seems like the SF writers may have been right.
My only gripe with CoreScoop is that in order to leave a comment it seems that you have to create a YouTube Channel in order to access the comment section.
By the by, to answer your question on CoreScoop about why go to Mars instead of the Moon, the big advantages Mars has are an atmosphere and a large and varied stock of usable resources that could be used to support a colony. The Moon makes a better launch pad for deep space missions, but nobody in their right mind would want to live there.

Please insert "ridiculous;" between "pretty" and "it" in the first paragraph. Some day I'll learn to use one of dang mewfangled keyboards.

Glad to hear you liked it. There isn't much I can do about the comments section. YouTube only allows people with accounts to leave a comment. You make a good point about living on Mars vs the Moon.
