September's Ask Cryptic
Captain's Blog Stardate 90297.27
September's Ask Cryptic is great! It seems to give a lot of good information about the future of STO in the coming months. Its hard for me to pick just a few things that I like; however I will start off by telling you to make sure you participate in this vote http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=379951 because it could make a difference to the future of STO.
The first thing I want to talk about from the Ask Cryptic is the Romulan Colony. I've read that it will be a new fleet holding, however in the latest Ask Cryptic Daniel Stahl says it will be a social zone. I'm a bit confused as to what it will be. Perhaps there will be a fleet holding within the Romulan Colony. Speaking of holding, fleets will be getting a new shuttle bay holding for their starbases.
Two new ships are also coming our way this month. The Wells class and a new KDF ship. I'm sure players can't wait for either. In Season 7 we will be seeing an update to the STF rewards. My guess is that it will be tied in with this new player reputation system we'll be getting. Apparently this system will give players new things to do at max rank.
This week I want to ask a question which has plagued STO since its infancy and was sort of mentioned by Daniel Stahl in this Ask Cryptic. Should there be a playable Borg faction? In the Ask Cryptic, Daniel said he would like to see both a Romulan and Borg playable faction. Leave your thoguhts below and in next week's blog I'll tell you how I think a Borg faction could work.

The trouble I have with the Borg as a playable race is that by their very nature, they are drones with a hive mentality. Either you will have to have a mob of Borg who mindlessly follow wherever you lead them, or the playable Borg would have to be like Seven of Nine, and we already have Liberated Borg as playable characters, so what's the point?
I like the idea of playable Romulans. In fact, my character Selana is my version of Tasha Yar's Great-Granddaughter (1/8 Human and 7/8 Romulan, though in the game she's simply designated as an Alien).

My thoughts exactly, well said!!!
As for "shuttle bay holding for their starbases", i had a strange beam in to the Starbase and i was trapped in some nowhere zone and had to beam out. But i saw an area in the starbase with shuttles in what looked like some circle. Has anyone else seen this???

Playable Romulans seems quite a popular desire according to the polls and comments. Personally i would rather they work on other areas of the game before they give us Romulans if we had to choose. It would love it if they could work on all the things they mentioned though. The game seems to slowly be getting better.

Mentioned elsewhere and previously was the idea of Cryptic of making Romulans a mini-faction of the 10 last levels, so it could start at 40 if the cap level hasn't change.
A Borg Faction would in fact require another kind of play for it to work within Star Trek "feel" I think, and maybe it would be a test-bed for an old idea of Cryptic for the rank of Admiral, a commander of ships may become a commander of cubes+drones+etc (and absolutely OP) more like an RTS kind of gameplay I think, if they would test it with the Borg and it stinks then Admiral Rank would only be like 5 or 10 levels more to grind or even base it on PvP, retaking the KDF-Fed "war".
As for the ships I really want a new kind of experience for KDF ships; Well's ship doesnt really excite me atm.
For me a Romulan(+Reman) race then Cardassian would make it more easy to add to the game.

I agree about the borg, it a lifesub perk and if was made to be for any, then why the did all them people who paid for it and then be burned later by crypic. Plus I want to see more of the reman story line as what going on in the romulan story arc. Plus i seen that starbase bug when you beam in down under the it. I try from other ways but that room does have shuttles sitting and no one in there.

I'll add my voice to this. A Borg playable faction would require a serious re-think for the reasons my fleet colleagues have already mentioned.
I'd much rather see the KDF side fleshed out more before ANY other playable faction is considered. Otherwise KDF will end up being sidelined again whilst Cryptic concentrated on a new race.
That said Cryptic is a commercial business and does this to make money (Boo, Hiss, root of all evil, etc) so I'm sure they will HAVE to go where profit lies. I cant blame them for that either.

I Love the idea of a Borg Faction, and I would think it would add a interesting if not different form of game play. Do I think it is something we will see anytime soon? No. First of all there is logical stuff that would need to be addressed as well as the whole idea that the Borg are a hive mind and that there are no individuals. Could they do something like that everybody like a Locutus or Seven of Nine? Maybe, but it wouldn't be realistic that the Borg would have so many of these 'special' drones. Also in order to keep the Lifetime subscribers happy the faction would only be available to Lifetime Subscribers and maybe 700+ day vets and should not be a F2P faction, it should only be available to those that have paid to play, or keep paying to play. I would think that it would at least be 2 years before we even begin thinking of adding a Borg faction in the game, but its a long shot. Again I'd love to have it as a 'Monster Play' faction, but anything beyond that is a pipedream.
What I do think is realistic and possible to do right now is add a Borg 'Suit' option for Liberated Borg Characters instead of only for BOFFs, and that players could choose from like 3-5 different kinds and perhaps have some customization of implants and attachments like that already exists now, but with expanded options. Also any Borg Suit would have to have both hands free and not have a prosthetic to allow for realistic rifle and gun use, like the Science Borg Boff, but just to have a Borg Skin would be nice and no something too hard to implement in-game.
I also wouldn't mind seeing a Borg Lockbox with a Borg Sphere or some other medium sized ship. Now I admit it... I'd drool to have a Cube in there, but unless they nerf it down significantly it just wouldn't be all that realistic and could easily be exploited. I would also like to See Liberated Borgs have the power to 'assimilate' enemy NPCs for brief times like the NPC Borgs already do, but it would be a limited time affect before the NPC dies afterwards, but it would add an interesting element to game play.
Lastly Romulans and or Cardassians... These obviously have the best chances of making it in the game, perhaps 12-18 months out, but I will not accept any new factions into the game, even Borg until they finish the KDF faction and tie up some loose ends on both the Fed and KDF sides first before starting a whole new faction. Finish what you've started before starting on something new.
That's about all I got to say about that, but I think I have definitely put some interesting but feasible ideas on the table that could work in terms of the Borg as well as alternatives.

After looking back at the previous posting about the long overdue mission 'Into the Hive' I actually could see how a Borg Faction could be feasible. It would roll something like this:
With the Borg Queen eliminated the Collective dissolves into separate independent factions or groups that are partially controlled by adjuncts or other major control drones of a particular area of space. In order to relieve some of the pressures of managing chaos to bring order, a single drone of each Borg ship that shows the highest potential (the player) is given command of that ship and sent out as envoys of the Cooperative and can make their own choices based on the situation and would have in essence free will to do whatever and whenever because of this new command protocol. Player could also choose one of two routes, they could continue to act like the old Borg Collective by destroying and assimilating other species or perhaps go a more diplomatic route and try to increase relations and gain trust from other species to accept the new Cooperative, but this would be a hard uphill battle as the old notions of the Borg remain deeply entrenched from the days of the Collective under guidance of the Borg Queen (now defeated). This would add a role-playing feel to the faction and allow the player to really control their destiny and how their game progresses with future encounters and missions being different and playing different based on the choices they have made.
Some independent Borg factions do technically exist in the Trek Universe, and not all retained the desire to assimilate other species, in fact most didn't, but some were more or less more aggressive and was willing to force their hand if it best served them, even if it did mean assimilation or enslavement (in the novels).
Perhaps if this is the story or similar that Cryptic wants to base on their Borg Faction, then I could see it being feasible and perhaps more digestible by the canon pushers, not that this game has a particularly strong emphasis on canon. :/

"Your agonizer, Mr. Kyle?"
Ever since i heard that as a child i wanted to be a mirror universe officer dispensing justice with Agonizrs, Tantalus fields and Agony Booths... Oh to be able to play the Terran Empire.
