Surface Tensions Review

Captain's Blog Stardate 91925.1

Warning, this blog does contain spoilers for the Surface Tensions episode. If you haven't played it yet, then go do that before reading this blog.

First of all let me just say that I'm so freaking excited it's not longer 2409 in STO and that it's now 2410. It took 4 years but we finally made it! Happy New Years!! I sort of liked that whole "last time on STO" thing at the beginning of the mission, but I hope once it's no longer a featured episode they either remove it or let us skip it.

So here's my question. The Suliban were added to the game along with the Romulans, and now we saw a Xindi representative. Doesn't anyone else think we're heading towards an Enterprise related storyline? Perhaps even getting playable Xindi and Suliban? It'd be nice to have Xindi lock box and none of these enemy lock boxes. Just a quick rant, I'm a little sick of seeing us have access to enemy ships. I understand it's a game, but it is starting to frustrate me.

Anyway, back on topic. The battle around and on ESD was pretty good. It reminded me of that battle around DS9. Then we go to Qo'noS and Shon decides to fly a ship into the planet killer and I think "oh damn, he's going to die" but Tuvok saved him. Damn it Tuvok! Now don't get me wrong, I didn't want Shon to die because I don't like him. I just thought it would be a nice twist to the story. All this war and we really don't see anyone that we know who gets killed or becomes an Undine.

Now the ending was pretty great. Finally the Federation, Klingons, and Romulan Republic have an official alliance. The Iconians made themselves known to us (sort of) and threatened us. Screw them! Overall I felt that this was a huge leap forward for STO. It's a fundamental change to the entire story. A new year with new alliances.

One final thought. If you recall, in Star Trek Generations there was something called the Nexus. It's scheduled to return in 2410. Will we eventually run into it? We do know that anyone who enters it essentially leaves an "echo" of themselves behind. Could this be the moment we've all been waiting for? Will we finally meet James T. Kirk and/or Jean-Luc Picard? Both could be echos in the Nexus, but according to the STO story, the real Picard retired in 2402. He could still be alive 8 years later and comes back to help us once again with the Nexus.

In the comments below let me know what was favorite and/or least favorite part of Surface Tensions. Also what do you think about my whole Nexus idea?

I guess Shon is punished enough for scrapping two Ships now. ;)

The Battle around the ESD surely brought a tear to my eye. But I still can't determine, if that was out of sadness or joy. :D

Interesting thought about the Nexus. However, I puzzled about the statement that it is scheduled to return in 2410. It was last seen in 2371 and return every 78 years, so that would be the year 2449. Well, I guess we meet it in the far far reaches of the Milky Way before it gets back to Federation Space.

According to this it passes through the galaxy every 39.1 years http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Nexus

LOL. I stand corrected. Still your thought about the Nexus is interesting and I am looking forward to see if and what Cryptic is going to make out of it.

I think the Nexus will even pass through one of the new sectors in New Romulan space....

I loved Surface tension, but don't understand why they want us to run everything 4-5 times...

Can anyone give me some tips on my Jem Hadar Dreadnought Carrier?

I used to have it set up with Anti-Proton weapons with the Aegis Set but poved to Polaron after getting the MXii Jem Hadar set. Seems to do as much damage but both were still lacking something especially in shielding.

I appreciate any help

Hi Caesar56,
first you should decide beams or cannons. If i were you i'd replace the cannons with dual beams and one of your aft beams with one turret. The science consoles, shield amplifiers i think, should be replaced with field generators for more max shield. The field emitter replaced with assimilated module and one of your neutronium alloys with the nukara particle thing.
Hf :)

Why would they remove PvP? The alliance is only part of the story. PvP is a different game mechanic. If it helps, think of PvP as war games.
