Tear Down This Wall
Captain's Blog Stardate 92710.35
I'm not sure what to do now. I've started working on a new star chart for this site because it's outdated, but we just got some really awesome news. Sometime in spring, Season 10 will be released and along with it is a whole new sector space!
The sector walls are coming down. STO will officially have 3 maps, one for each quadrant. Currently that means the Alpha, Beta, and Delta quadrants. I believe this also means that at some point in the future we'll be exploring the Gamma quadrant and they'll add a map for that. Perhaps I should stop working on the updated star chart until I see what Cryptic has in store for us.
Enough about my work. I can't believe this is happening! At the Star Trek Las Vegas convention in 2013 I asked the devs about this and they didn't seem optimistic that something like this could or would be done... but here we are! Is it weird that I'm excited for this? I just think it's great to finally have a more open map.
I assume travelling will still be basically the same. Transwarps will take you to the same places they always have. That sector space race thing to earn energy credits will still exist. Really all this means is that there will be less loadings screens. My biggest concern is for people who have average computers. I hope the added resources that need to be loaded won't cause their computers to slow down.
I guess we have to wait and see. Are you just excited as I am or does this not affect you in any way? Frankly now I'm looking forward to hearing more Season 10 details.

To be honest I'd rather they fixed load outs first, however that said I love this idea.
I'm the type that will quite happily travel each sector without using slipstream, watching what flies past and probably doing doff set-ups.
This will make the whole thing seem much more immersive. I have a feeling there's monetisation possibilities in this though, such as "move faster for 500 dil" for example but I wouldn't begrudge them that.
Overall I love the idea.

I paused when you mentioned about charging for a speed increase.
When we entered the Dyson Sphere, they created "atmospheric flight training level 1, 2, and 3" in the Dyson Sphere fleet spire.
While I only bought level 1, and didn't find any noticeable improvement, I still thought it was an interesting idea.
Perhaps the season 10 Fleet holding will allow captains to spend fleet marks and Dilithium to unlock slipstream drive for longer times, or something to increase speed.
(Over all, It will be interesting to move diagonally, so from Sol I could shoot strait to Qo'noS without going down and then over....)
Chris
PS:> Should I go back and buy Atmospheric Flight 2+3? Seems like it would only be used in the sphere, and that combat is just not that hard. ; )

To be honest Chris I've not noticed any difference between atmospheric flight 1,2 or 3! lol

It definitely does make a difference... When I was going to buy level 1, I went to full impulse and wrote down my speed. Then I bought level 1, and then I went to full impulse, checked my speed again, and found I was moving faster... So I bought level 2 and 3 and not only was my impulse speed higher, it was visibly noticeable that I was going faster, as the light trails coming off of my nacelles was longer than it had been before buying Level 1... It does make a difference...

They'll probably have less people per instance (and a larger number of instances to select) to reduce lag as well, that is if they are half competent.

Well the good thing is that instances are auto-created, so hopefully they reduce the number of people for each. Does anyone know the current limit? 50? 100?

Hallo,
i have a suggestion for those sector maps:
Remove them complete and transfer the traveling between stars and stuff to the bridge of a ship. So i can call my 1th officer on my ship and tell him, where i want to travel(the map could open and i just choose target), and i just need to say: energy! that would feel more like star trek in my opinion. By the travel time you can do micromanagment stuff on your bridge, also would be funny, to take other players with you by traveling. One can also choose a adventure travel option, where i would encounter foundry mission randomly for example, with other players together....all on one bridge...not sure if that is do able, but it sounds cool to, i would spend more time on my bridge, and thats what star trek should be or?
not sure if thats understandable sry for my broken english ;)
best regards

Players have asked for that since day 1, and I don't think we'll ever get it. It's a great idea and I would love to have that. It makes sense and would give us a reason to use your bridge, but I think they want us to see other players flying in their ships.

I know I'm a little late for this but I just had a thought.
I knew something like this would happen when I got in my Dauntless. With zero skills in sector-space speed I can't even use the "Enhanced advanced uber epic zoomy slipstream" drive it has without hitting a wall. My first thought was that they might actually be opening up sector space because they have literally hit the limitations of slipstream for ships.

I've now seen a the visualization of this in a video from tribble. I approve, this makes much more sense.
I would suggest that they need to make the scale larger though to make it feel more like space. (If you drastically increase warp speed, I'm ok with that).
Other they might want to make some things you don't want to fly through ie the Briar patch or you'll be slowed or something.
Finally great idea Buffy, I'd love to see that, at least a reason to be on the bridge.
