The STO Story

Captain's Blog Stardate 91886.75

It's official. April 22nd, 2014 is the release of Star Trek Online Season 9: A New Accord. Break out the Romulan Ale, get your Dabo face on, and reserve a holo-suite because it's time to party!

I've talked about some of the features (i.e. kit and reputation revamp) and you've all given me your thoughts. Overall, it seems like people are excited. What I'm looking forward to is the continuation of the story. Cryptic released a dev blog that summarizes the story, but it doesn't summarize the entire STO story. Here's my simple summary of what I think are the important points.

The Federation and Klingons were at war for disagreements over the Undine. Eventually the Tal Shiar showed their faces and the Federation had to go to war with them as well. Surprise, the Undine and Iconians are involved. Now about the same time that the Romulan Republic is formed and has an alliance with the Federation and Klingons. I think it's safe to say the Federation/Klingon is pretty much dying out.

We then pretty much have threats from other races. The True Way, Breen, Elachi, Voth, etc., but it always seems to come back to the Undine and Iconians. The Borg decide to attack, but we learn that they are trying to assimilate Undine. We find a Dyson sphere, and learn it was used by the Iconians. Gateways pop up all over.

So what does this all mean? Are the Undine and Iconians one and the same? Nah, I'm just making that up. What I do think is that the Iconians are the ultimate enemy and Cryptic is saving them for much later in the game. The Undine are the second worst threat and are sort of acting as a story filler until we finally face the Iconians (if ever).

One final thought. Does anyone else feel that we have a lot of loose ends in the story? From the very beginning until now it feels like very few stories have wrapped up. It's both a good and bad thing. It's nice that we can continue telling these stories, but at the same time it would be nice to end old stories and start new ones. Just a thought.

In the comments below let me know what do you think about the STO story. Is there anything you would like to see? Something in the story that you don't like? What was your favorite moment so far?

To be honest, I like every single bit of the story so far. Cryptic seems to take great efforts to come up with new missions and ideas. Sometimes, however, it somehow still feels like not being enough though. LOL. I guess, one can complain about anything anytime.

I especially like all the Mini-Series, that are equal to all Factions. But this is also reason for some concern to me.

With the powers of the Alpha Quadrant now working more and more together than actual fighting each other, maybe Cryptic should introduce a mechanism, that allows player of different factions to team up in Adventure Zones. Criterias for that could be the Player must have completed his faction's own Story Arc.

I have often thought to myself: "This story needs an editor!" I am not sure if all the different threads will ever be resolved satisfactorily, or if certain 'endings' the players participate in are supposed to be more definitive than they were. For example, at the end of the Undine chain, you destroy a really big gate thingie -- was that supposed to be the end of that story (for now) and why you're supposed to be surprised that the Undies are back with Cooper? I'm not sure *what* that's supposed to be.

Anyhow, I am looking forward to some of the innumerable threads coming to definitive conclusions. I also like TacPaddy's idea that completing the story-arc allows cross factions team ups. *THAT* would be a good reason to max out, yet finish all the story missions.

Honestly, the story isn't that interesting or epic until the dyson sphere, I think this story is going to have a climax conclusion, basically the height of the story is the end. Which will be fun, as I agree on the Iconians being the big final enemy. I still hope they put in the Tier 6 ships (if ever) before that. Because let's face it, more powerful ships and equipment to fight the Undine and Iconians (if we do face the Iconians).

IMO, we need a new level cap with the next set of missions they add. being lvl 50 becomes monotonous after a while. I miss that imitation- Nimoy voice that you hear when you level....
