What's Up With Dev Blogs?

Captain's Blog Stardate 91714.48

Before I get started I'd just like to send my thoughts and prayers to Leonard Nimoy who has lung disease. I wish him all the best and hope he continues to live a long Vulcan life!

I just need to vent for a moment about Cryptic's dev blogs. Let me just start by saying that I think the dev blogs are a brilliant idea and I was happy when Cryptic started doing them. It's a great way to give players all the information they need for upcoming features. So if you haven't read them I highly recommend that you start doing so whenever they are released.

Which brings me to my next point, why do they release every dev blog within the two weeks before a major update, but once the update is done we hear nothing? Sure you can go through the official STO forums, read all the interviews, etc. to get some information, but isn't that what the dev blogs are for? I've always viewed them as a summary of what's going on in STO for those of us who don't have time to be on the forums or read/listen to the interviews.

A part of me hates that I'm complaining about this because it's so trivial, but at the same time it bothers me that we go weeks without hearing anything, then all of a sudden day after day we get dev blogs. There've been occasions where we've gotten 2 blogs on the same day! It's almost as if they are rushing to get them out. Wouldn't it be logical to release them over time?

I don't know. That's just my two cents. Maybe I've just gotten assimilated one too many times and now I'm thinking too efficiently like the Borg. Let me know if you agree or disagree with me!

Never really considered it until you brought it up. After a little reflection, I agree. We hear nothing after an update unless there are changes to be made at some point in the future. Or, Cryptic is responding to a "known issue." Yep, let us know what's going on, please.

One simple word: marketing. The blog blitz in the lead-up to a new major release is strictly for that reason. The relative calm afterward is due to the cool-off on the hype. They built things up, now they just want players to play and spend money in-game. That's all there is to it. :)

I agree that it's probably mostly marketing. I can't help feeling like at least in part though they don't have a clue what they are going to have until it is about two weeks from launch. This is just my cynicism, but things are always so buggy when they launch that it feels like they spent about two weeks putting it together.

There are always going to be bugs upon release of new content. It's impossible to release something in a timely fashion and have it be perfect. Bugs are annoying, but I think it's better to get the content out quick then make some quick bug fixes rather than spend months trying to fix every bug before releasing.

Right. They spend months after they the seasonal update fixing just a few bugs, while others go unfixed for longer.

When LoR launched, it took them about 8 months just to fix the doff department heads from resetting, which ultimately fixed the ship stations from having the same problem.

They are incompetent. I played Guild Wars 1 for over 6 years before I got bored with it. Bugs in that game were fixed and patch ASAP. As soon as they had a fix, they put it out. Sometimes they would have multiple patches in a single day for multiple bug fixes. That game ran pretty dang smoothly for the most part and any major content update they wouldn't have half the game break that took months to fix.

But with STO.......*sigh*

My problem is they need to pay more attention to what people think about the dev blogs. Many of my fleetmates don't like some of the ideas they are pushing and we hear complaints from lots of other sources. The dev blogs are the perfect opportunity for them to get some real feedback, but they don't let us reply with comments. I just hope they come to their senses before they run the game into the ground.

Normally the STO forums are the best place for feedback, not the reply section on the dev blog. I'm curious, what ideas don't your fleet mates like?

Also, I wouldn't be worrying about this game if I were you. Three years ago when it was released plenty of people predicted the game would shut down within a year, and here we are 4 years later. As a whole, the game has been improving.

I pay very litle attention to the Dev Blogs, partly because anyhing important ends up on th STOA Blog and I don't have to read thirty or more of the Devs giving teasers for their Next Great Idea (without actually telling us what that idea is going to be).

I also spend very little time on the forums. I found early on that most of the forums are just gripe sessions for people who want to take cheap shots at the game (and many of whom have never actually played it). I do sometimes use the forums for help when I'm having a problem and PWE Tech Support sends one of its "Thank you for your input. We should be responding to your request in a week or two." responses.

I feel the same way as Admiral Mike, that being able to respond to the Dev Blogs would be a better way to provide feedback on new ideas than the forums, where things tend to get lost in the mass of mostly unorganized material spread over thousands of pages of posts.

Maybe they don't release the dev blogs until the last minute because they know people are going to complain about something and they want to reduce the amount of complaints they get.
