You're Such a Character!

Captain's Blog Stardate 92365.53

Part of the allure of Star Trek were the characters. We watched them grow, change, learn, and become a crew. It felt like you knew these characters as well as you knew yourself. In some ways it even felt like you were part of the crew. That's always something that has been missing from Star Trek Online.

I watched the Official Produce Walkthrough video that was put out by Cryptic, and damn I impressed! It's funny how I've known this whole time that cast members from Voyager would be returning, but until I saw them in action in this video I really didn't think much about it other than it's cool.

Apparently these characters will be fighting alongside you and playing an important part in the Delta Rising story, which is great. Having them in the game definitely brings that Star Trek feeling. Here are characters that we know and now get to learn more about them. Although while that's great, I would like to see some original characters.

I know some people don't like Tovan Khev from the Romulan Republic story, but I have to be honest here, I do. I think he is the first character in the game to truly get a story and personality that made you like/dislike him. There have been a few other characters here and there with voice overs, back stories, personalities, etc., but none reach the level of Tovan Khev or any character from the Star Trek shows.

Having crew members of Voyager returning is very important to the game because of they are alive (in a fictional sense). Hopefully going forward we'll see more of this and perhaps more original characters that we can grow to care about as we have done with some many Star Trek characters. What do you think about these crew members returning and the idea of more original characters?

Ok one thing has me completely bothered by this: They have aged very little for 30+ years. I can understand the Doctor not aging and also Tuvok, but Seven, Harry, and Neelix don't look much different than they did 30 years ago. I know medical science is advanced then but still not a wrinkle on them? I find that hard to believe.

Neelix I could understand. He is alien and I'm pretty sure we don't know much about their aging. I can agree with Seven, but I do feel like they aged Harry pretty well.

Seven has nanites rebuilding her body, so she won't age the same way other do- ; )

A-ha! I knew there had to be a reason. Good job.

I'm also going to go with the blue liquid that Neelix was downing when Tuvok and I beamed down was some sort of Water of Life.

This addition is ok, but it really doesn't impress me. I would like to see more interaction with my own crew. Currently, there's absolutely no reason to visit my ship's internals.

Indeed. That's something I would love to see. Perhaps in a future blog I'll talk about that ways it could be added to the game.

I also liked how they inserted Tovan Khev into the storyline, and I'm happy to keep him on my Romulan's away team and bridge.

Though to a lesser degree, I liked how in the new Fed tutorial, you were given Elisa Flores (sp?) as a Tac officer, and she was someone you had interacted with in the game.

I hope the future content has ground missions where we are doing things with our Bridge Officers. (unlike the last several featured episodes)
I still enjoy this game's customization options for the away teams, and feel with the time I spent on uniform design, and working on Boffs in the tailor, I like being able to run around with my crew on ground missions.

Having the Voyager crew with us through some of Delta Rising will be cool. I wonder how many new missions there will be?
(And I assume they will be the same play through experience for Fed, KDF and Roms, since we are all working in an alliance.)

I look forward to meeting all characters from Voyager. It brings something to the game that I longed for such a long time.

Hope many actors will hop on the star trek online boat and give permission to use their facial looks.

It gives me some of that 'Gene Roddenberry' feeling!
