The STO Academy Build Planner is a free, browser-based planner for Star Trek Online. It lets you put your whole character together in one place, from skill points to the ship you fly, and see how the pieces fit before you spend a single Energy Credit or Dilithium on them. It is the successor to the original skill planner from stoacademy.com, rebuilt from the ground up, with ship, equipment, and trait catalogs that the community helps keep current.
Character: choose your faction and career, then pick the personal, starship, and reputation traits your captain brings along.
Skills: spend points across the space and ground skill trees and the specialization tree, with point costs and prerequisites enforced for you.
Starship: pick a ship, set its upgrade level, and fill its weapon, console, device, and hangar slots with items in the rarity and Mk you want.
Bridge officers: seat officers on your ship and choose their abilities. Only abilities that are legal for each seat, rank, and career are offered.
Duty officers: fill your space and ground rosters.
Away team: set up your ground equipment, kit, and away team officers.
Notes and summary: jot down how the build is meant to be played, and check a one-page summary of everything you chose.
How to use it
Open the planner and start on the Character tab. Choose your faction and career first, because several later choices depend on them.
Move through the sections using the tabs at the top: Player, Starship, Duty Officers, and Skills. Click any empty slot to see exactly what can go in it.
Pick your ship on the Starship tab, then fill in its equipment and seat your bridge officers.
Spend your skill points, add your traits and duty officers, and check the Summary tab to review the finished build.
Save it, share it, or export it. Changing a choice that makes other choices invalid, such as swapping ships or careers, clears only the affected slots.
Saving and sharing your build
You do not need an account to plan. You can export a build to a local .stobuild file and load it again later, and you can search other players' shared builds, browse public profiles, or fork a build with Refit to use as your starting point. Creating a free account adds cloud save slots, a permanent shareable link for every saved build, and your own public profile. Anyone with a link can view your build read-only, and can Refit it into a copy of their own.
