STO Academy is a free resource built to help Star Trek Online captains get the most out of their characters and ships. Right now that means two tools: the STO Academy Build Planner and the Combat Log Reader — with more planned as the site grows.
Plan your skills, ship, equipment, bridge officers, duty officers, and traits, all in one place — no account required, and you can search other players' shared builds, browse public profiles, or fork (Refit) a build as a starting point without signing in either. Creating an account adds cloud save slots with a permanent shareable link for every build, your own public profile, and the ability to propose new content to the catalog — which is what keeps it current: signed-in players propose, and it goes live once enough others vouch for it.

STO Academy has been around in one form or another for years. It started out as STOFan, then was rebuilt and rebranded about a year in as STO Academy, stoacademy.com, with guides, tools, and walkthroughs for the game. One of those tools was the skill planner at skillplanner.stoacademy.com, which a lot of captains had bookmarked and linked in their fleet Discords.
Star Trek Online never stops shipping new ships, gear, and abilities, and keeping a planner's catalog current on top of running the rest of the site eventually became more than one person could sustain. We announced that STO Academy would be shutting down, and later posted a proper goodbye once it happened. The hiatus that followed ran much longer than anyone expected.
It came back in 2026, rebuilt from the ground up as the STO Academy Build Planner with the Combat Log Reader alongside it. The full story is in our letter, Welcome Back, Captains.
What made the old planner hard to sustain was that every update fell on one person. The rebuilt catalog works differently. Signed-in players can propose new ships, equipment, traits, and abilities. A proposal is screened for inappropriate text, and it only goes live once three other players approve it. Nobody can approve their own proposal, players can report a bad one, and whoever submitted it can edit or withdraw it until it is approved.
We keep the code running, fix bugs, and handle moderation. The community decides what is actually in the catalog, which is what should keep it current for the long haul.
The tools are only useful if their rules match the game, so we work to keep the Build Planner's rules and catalog in line with it. The Combat Log Reader's numbers are calculated from the log you upload, using definitions that are written out in plain language in the results guide, so you can check them yourself.
Star Trek Online patches often, and a community catalog can lag behind the game for a while after one. If something is missing, out of date, or wrong, tell us. Corrections to game data are always welcome, and we read every one.
STO Academy is built and maintained by Attilio, who also writes the guides. Attilio has played Star Trek Online since it launched, so the game's systems and its community are familiar ground, and is a web developer with years of corporate experience. The point of that combination is simple: someone who plays the game builds the tools, and someone who builds software for a living keeps them reliable.
The site is published by AV Innovation LLC, the company named in the footer of every page. It is an independent fan project, and questions, corrections, and ideas all go through the contact page.
STO Academy is free to use. Hosting and storage cost money, so the site is supported by optional donations and may show advertising. Neither decides what the guides say or what the tools do. See the Privacy Policy for what is collected, and the Terms of Service for the rules of using the site.
