Selecting the Right Deflector, Engine, Core, and Shield

Short answer first: start with Discovery Legends, then pair it with Iconian, Terran, or Dyson depending on whether your build needs defense, control, or exotic damage. The rest of this page is the reasoning, plus what it costs and what real builds do.

The four slots in question are the deflector, the impulse engine, the warp core, and the shield array, which players shorten to DECS. They are worth attention because reputation gear fills them without any lockbox luck.

Quick picks by build

What a set costs

Most reputations offer a four piece space set, one item per DECS slot. The pieces unlock as you climb the tiers: the deflector at Tier 2, the engine at Tier 3, the warp or singularity core at Tier 4, and the shield at Tier 5. Reaching Tier V, which unlocks the last piece, needs 100,000 total reputation experience, so the slow part is the reputation itself rather than the shopping.

Each piece costs 750 marks, 5 of the reputation's special items, 32,500 refined dilithium, and 40,000 energy credits. For a full set that adds up to 3,000 marks, 20 special items, 130,000 refined dilithium, and 160,000 energy credits. Once you finish Tier 6, each piece halves in marks, dilithium, and credits to 375 marks, 16,250 dilithium, and 20,000 credits, with the special items still at 5, so a full set drops to 1,500 marks, 20 special items, 65,000 dilithium, and 80,000 credits.

How the sets differ

These are the base values on the Mk XII reputation items, before upgrades.

The engine and shield pieces follow the same themes. The Iconian engine adds +5 engine power and +5% defense, and adds energy resistance at full throttle. The Terran engine gives +100 resistance for 15 seconds after you are hit by an offline effect, and adds 5 auxiliary power. Set bonuses apply when you wear several pieces of one set, and the current values are on the in-game tooltip, so they are not quoted here.

What real builds run

Real builds rarely stick to one set. The community builds published by STO BETTER show the spread:

None of the four is a single reputation set. Each piece is chosen for what it adds, and the community's own guide calls Discovery Legends the most important reputation because so much of the engine, core, shield, weapon, and trait value sits there.

Before you spend anything

Do not upgrade a piece until you know it is staying in the build, since the same community guide warns against upgrading gear beyond the basics until then. Lay out the slots in the Build Planner first. Several of these cores raise power caps, so Power Levels and Subsystem Management is the natural next read, and Exotic Damage (Science) Builds Explained covers the builds the Dyson and Temporal pieces serve.
