Starship traits are the quiet backbone of a modern Star Trek Online build. A trait costs no slot on your ship, no cooldown to manage, and often changes how an entire loadout plays. Many are tied to a specific ship, so choosing a hull is partly choosing its trait, and knowing which ones are worth building around saves a lot of trial and error. This guide groups the traits you will see most often by what they do, using the rules as they stand in Season 37 (September 2026).
How starship traits work
A starship trait only works when it is slotted in one of your active starship trait slots. Most are unlocked by earning the Tier V Starship Mastery of a particular ship, and a few come from lockboxes, packs, or the T6-X upgrade path. The published builds from the STO BETTER community slot between five and seven starship traits, so the choice is real: you cannot take everything, and the strongest combination depends on the build.
I have not ranked these in a single tier list, because a trait that is essential for a torpedo boat is dead weight on an exotic ship. Instead they are grouped by the job they do.
Firing speed and power
These traits speed up your energy weapons. Haste shortens a weapon's firing cycle by the formula cycle time divided by one plus the total haste, and separate sources of haste add together.
Emergency Weapon Cycle. When you use Emergency Power to Weapons, you get 20% firing cycle haste for energy weapons and a 50% reduction in weapon power cost for 30 seconds. The wiki notes that because of how power cost reductions combine, the real reduction is closer to a third, and shrinks further if you have other weapon power cost modifiers. You unlock it from the Tier V mastery of the Arbiter Battlecruiser and its Legendary Avenger variant, the Kurak Battlecruiser, or the Morrigu Heavy Warbird and its Legendary Valdore variant.
Calm Before the Storm. It grants 33% haste for 20 seconds after gaining 10 stacks of Calm. Several published builds pair it with Photonic Officer for cooldown help.
Heart of Sol. A 10% haste for 20 seconds, one of a family of similar faction traits.
Critical hits
Critical hit traits can raise your chance far above the 2.5% every player starts with.
Synthetic Good Fortune. Pilot and control abilities grant Control Expertise and critical chance, +0.5% per stack up to 40 stacks, for up to +20%.
Universal Designs. Activating a universal console gives +2% critical chance for 20 seconds, stacking up to five times for a maximum of +10%.
Super Charged Weapons. Firing a torpedo gives directed energy weapons +1.5% critical chance for 20 seconds, up to three stacks, or +4.5%.
If all three were at full stacks together, that is 34.5% additional critical chance. At the base +50% critical severity, every 10 points of chance is worth 5% more damage, so that would add roughly 17% to your damage. In practice you will not keep every stack up at once, but it shows why these traits appear in so many builds.
Torpedoes and kinetic damage
Entwined Tactical Matrices. Activating Fire at Will or Scatter Volley makes your next torpedo attack a Torpedoes: Spread, and activating Spread gives you Fire at Will I and Scatter Volley I. It links energy and torpedo firing modes together, and it comes from the Tier V mastery of the Gagarin and Qugh Miracle Worker Battlecruisers. It appears in energy, torpedo, and exotic builds alike.
Ceaseless Momentum. Firing any torpedo gives +5% kinetic damage and +5 kinetic damage resistance rating for 45 seconds, stacking up to five times, and takes a second off torpedo recharge. It comes from the Na'Qjej Intel Battlecruiser mastery.
Subspatial Warheads. A High Yield or Transport Warhead hit spawns a rift that chases the nearest foe for physical damage and an engine power drain. It comes from the Son'a Intel Battlecruiser mastery.
Target That Explosion. When your next torpedo deals damage, up to five nearby allies launch a torpedo at the same target.
Spore-Infused Anomalies. Whenever you activate a Science or Intelligence bridge officer ability, your anomalies deal electrical damage and drain the power of foes within 5 kilometers of them, and the damage scales with your Exotic Particle Generator skill. It comes from the Somerville and Batlh Intel Science Vessel masteries.
Improved Photonic Officer. It extends Photonic Officer by 10 seconds and adds 25% bonus exotic damage, shield healing, and hull healing for 30 seconds, and the STO BETTER exotic guide notes it is typically cheaper to buy from other players than to chase directly.
History Will Remember. It grants +10% threat generation per stack, up to +300%, which is why tanks slot it. The tanking guide covers how threat works.
Building your set
Start from your ship's own trait, then decide what your build cannot do without. A Fire at Will energy build wants firing speed and critical chance. A torpedo boat wants Entwined Tactical Matrices, Ceaseless Momentum, and Subspatial Warheads. An exotic ship wants Spore-Infused Anomalies and Improved Photonic Officer. Every one of the real builds published by STO BETTER, including the Arbiter Fire at Will build, the Doolittle torpedo boat, and the Fleet Nova exotic build, shares Entwined Tactical Matrices or Spore-Infused Anomalies as a centerpiece, which is why they appear so often here.
